Entry level drum kits are usually a good investment for kids, as they only cost about $300 or so. Kids are easy to please, after all, and parents can lessen the financial risk when they lose interest with their new “toy.”

But for adults and music lovers who are a bit more mature, the simplistic features and designs of most starter kits are rather unpalatable. You need something of good quality even if it is a starter kit for you to learn or to practice on so you can hone your skill. And that means relying on a reputable brand such as Yamaha, which has been making electronic drum kits for almost half a century. The Yamaha DTX-400K Electronic Drum Kit may be an entry-level drum set, but it is heads and shoulders above the rest of the competition.

Specs and Features of the DTX-400K

So what makes the DTX-400K so special? Here’s a list of its features:

  • It doesn’t take up a lot of room, as it is only 44 inches across and 26 inches deep.
  • You get a four 7-inch drum pads plus three 10-inch cymbals, along with a high-hat controller.
  • You have ten preprogrammed kits available, so you can switch to a maple or oak drum setup, or go from hard rock to funk to R & B. That’s like having ten drum sets in one setup.
  • You have 169 different voices to choose from, so you can create your own drum kits if you want. You have 42 percussions, 16 hi-hats, 31 cymbals, 36 toms, 29 kicks, and 23 snares.
  • There are 10 play-along songs you can practice on, and you can add to them via the USB connection. You can even download new songs from the Yamaha website.
  • There are also 10 different training routines to help you become a better drummer.
  • It is also upgradeable, so as you get better, you don’t need to buy a different drum kit. You can just buy additional equipment to serve your needs better.

Pros and Cons

Perhaps the most important advantage of the DTX-400K is that it’s made by Yamaha. Its quality is, in a word, astounding. It is easy to set-up and use, the feel of the drum pads are nice, and the educational techniques are interesting and effective. If you’re a beginner, there’s a better chance that you’ll stick to the program because everything sounds good and works well.

Of course, the price is a sticking point, but then you are likely to save money in the long run, when you just upgrade instead of buy another different drum kit. And besides, you’re paying for quality and durability.

The only problem here is that like other manufacturers Yamaha hasn’t perfected foot pedals as of yet. The sensitivity may not be always easy to adjust, and unlike a real one you’re not able to change the tension on the pedal.

Of course, you don’t have a throne, drumsticks, and a set of headphones, but you can order the DTX-400K with an extra bundle for those things.

This is much better than other starter sets you can find. If quality is more important to you than a low price tag, then you can’t go wrong with the DTX-400K.
