Simmons SD7K Electronic Drum Set (Standard)
  • Drum module, One crash cymbal pad
  • One ride cymbal pad
  • One hi-hat cymbal pad
  • Hi-hat controller pedal
  • Three tom pads

There are some drum sets you’ll want to use when you play live, but at home when you want to practice and record music then you don’t need the absolute best. You just need something that’s good enough, is quite affordable, and yet durable for everyday use. According to quite a few people, that just means you need the Simmons SD7K Electronic Drum Set (Standard).

Specs and Features of the SD7K

This is the upgrade on the entry-level SD5K, and as such it has more features you can play with:

  • You get three tom pads, three cymbals with a hi-hat controller, and a dual zone snare pad. That means the snare pad can accommodate two different sounds depending on where you hit it. There’s also a bass drum pad which can accommodate a double pedal. The pads are all adjustable.
  • There are more than 300 sounds to choose from, and you already have 20 kits preset in the drum kit. You have space for 30 preset drum kits, so you can make up your own arrangements and styles as you see fit.
  • It comes with a built-in reverb and metronome.
  • There are 50 internal songs to choose from for practice, and you can mute the drum parts from these songs to insert your own.
  • You have MIDI in and out, plus a USB connection for your PC. There’s also a phone jack for your headphones, and a stereo output for a sound system. You can also use the aux input jack to use your mp3 or CD player.

Pros and Cons

There are quite a few advantages to the Simmons SD7K Electronic Drum Set (Standard). There are more pads and sounds compared to your regular starter kits, and there are more preset kits as well. The sound is decent enough, although of course the more finicky drummers may not want to use this for actual live performances.

But all in all, this is a very serviceable drum kit, and it can be a great help for practice sessions for intermediate players. Even experienced drummers will appreciate its presence for practice and for convenient recording.

A lot of customers have also remarked on how durable this system is. For the most part, you’re going to get a lot of use out of the SD7K for quite a long while.

The problem with the SD7K is not really with the drum kit, for it provides good value for its price. The main problem is with Simmons, because their customer support is a little uncooperative. So if something does go wrong, getting it replaced isn’t going to be a snap.

For some reason, there are some online gripes about how unsuitable this drum set is for live playing. But that is understandable because that’s not really its actual function. Its function is to provide a great drum kit for drummers to practice on and record music, without having to bother the neighbors or set up an elaborate microphone system for recording.

And as a practice drum kit, it delivers well. You get reliable pads, durable parts, and an affordable price tag. Use it every day in your apartment, and it’s a great way to relax or practice your drumming skills
